How to Stay Mentally Healthy
Friday, April 8th, 2016

Mental health plays a large role in the overall well-being of a person as it dictates one’s ability to function properly behaviorally and emotionally. While some mental illnesses are attributed to hormonal imbalance (which may be treated by hormone replacement doctors in Florida), others can be treated by natural means such as improving the patient’s environment and offering support.

Here are everyday activities you can partake in order to either improve or maintain your mental health:

Form meaningful friendships

with people who you know will positively influence you – the kinds who always offer support and understanding. Try to develop deep, meaningful bonds as these have a good effect on our overall well-being. If you find yourself lost on where to start finding people for you, try looking for possible friends at:

  • Local communities: it’s best to start from home. Volunteer your time for a cause you care about, offer a helping hand to your neighbor, or join community run events.
  • Join a club or a gathering that have the same interests as you – you’re bound to make a new friend as you both gush over art, books, or movies you like.
  • Use the internet. Comment on content you like or post your own; by engaging other people you widen your chances of meeting someone who you enjoy talking to.

Stay physically healthy

as much as you can. Although mental health is important, don’t take your body for granted! Be active and exercise as often as you can. Simple ways to do this is to:

  • Walk if the destination is near, or ride a bike if it’s a moderate distance. Avoid taking the car wherever you go; not only will the extra steps benefit your physical health but it will also help the environment as well due to the reduction of your carbon footprint.
  • Do quick workouts in between tasks, especially if you’ve been doing something rather dormant such as browsing the internet on your laptop or reading a book.
  • Eat well and on time; avoid skipping meals or eating unhealthy foodstuffs. Have breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up, eat lunch at midday, and have dinner right after sunset (and never shortly before sleeping).
  • Overly-strenuous exercise is harming to the body. Only do them moderately.

Enjoy yourself

and join or create projects you know you’ll have fun doing. By participating in recreational activities, you’ll lower your stress levels and enable yourself to relax a little more. There are few things more uplifting for a mood than completing a painting, reading a good book, writing a good story, having a good workout, or doing something productive.

  • You can also challenge yourself to learn new things (as long as you’re the kind of person who enjoys educational activities) like a new language or a new skill.
  • Playing games is another good way to enjoy yourself. Whether it be a video game, a traditional board game, or a round of cards with your friends – anything as long as you’re amused.

Rest well

and refrain from overexerting your body. Sleep as early as you can and make sure to give yourself 8 hours of sleep nightly. Don’t undersleep or oversleep as both are bad for your health.

  • If possible, take 15-20 minute naps midday. This is usually enough to charge you right back up for the rest of the day.
  • If sleeping isn’t an option, try meditating. (Yoga, a form of physical exercise, can also help you relax.)

As mentioned before, mental health is tied to the physical well-being of the body, so take care of both!
