Someone Call the Doctor! Medical Myths Debunked
Sunday, April 10th, 2016

In an age when healthcare has become so advanced that we already have hormone replacement doctors in Florida and anywhere else in the world, it’s easy to think that there is no longer anyone who believes in medically unsound advice.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of them, and they spread around scientifically unfounded medical hearsays.

Don’t be one of those who would fall into these traps. Here are a few medical myths that aren’t to be taken too seriously.

  • Too Close, Too Dark – Remember when your parents told you to back off a few inches from the TV? Or how about when they told you to stop reading your favorite novel because it’s a little bit too dark? Well, you know how parents are, always concerned about your health, including your sight. Their fear that you’ll go blind, however, is definitely unfounded. This is because your eyes are made up of muscles. While they get strained, they do not sustain any permanent damage whenever you read in dark places or sit too close to any screen. Permanent damage is usually caused by looking at either the sun or laser light.
  • I Toad You, It’s Okay – Frogs and toads look slimy and gross, so it’s understandable that you don’t want to lay a finger on them. But if the only reason why you refuse to touch these cool-looking amphibians is because you think you’ll have warts, then you are dead wrong. In fact, it’s not frogs you should be avoiding if you don’t want to have warts – it’s people. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread via human contact.
  • Neither Chocolates nor Oil – Currently, medicine can’t find any direct relation between eating oily foods and chocolate and acne, so if you’re not eating them is because you don’t want zits, then you need to find a better reason; having a better diet could and should be one of them. Going back, if you want to avoid acne, try to check which cosmetic products you use cause them. Also, you should know that sweating and humidity causes it. If you can’t tell what’s causing these blemishes on your back and face, then you should consult a dermatologist.
  • An Hour After Mealtime – Imagine yourself on a swimming trip with either your family or friends. After a sumptuous meal, you decide to hit the water. Them, being the people who love you the most, stop you, telling you to wait for at least an hour before you take the plunge. They’re concerned that something really awful might happen to you. They’re kind of right though. However, what they have in their minds are impossible scenarios; the worst thing you can get for swimming right away is abdominal cramping, which rarely happens. So if you don’t mind the remote chances of getting stomachache, then give your sea-legs a shot once you’re done feasting. There are a lot of medical myths out there. Some of them, just like these ones, seem like facts. That is why you have to read a lot and be updated, or else you’ll be a believer of these hearsays.
